Domino: Hotshots #5 // Review
It's the series finale of Domino: Hotshots and the Hotshots themselves 'didn't come to play around, and neither did the team behind the book. Gail Simone writes this final showdown. While David Baldéon and Michael Shelfer lend their talents to the art alongside colorist Jim Charalampidis and letterer VC's Clayton Cowles. It's a strong ending to the miniseries.
Domino may have lost Deadpool and White Fox in the previous issue, but she still has Outlaw, Diamondback, Atlas Bear, and the one-and-only Black Widow. Not a bad team to have backing you up. Unless of course, you're facing a newly created god whose angry at you for killing the love of her life. Domino's going to need every last bit of luck she can get if she wants to get out of this alive.
Domino undergoes incredible character development as she struggles to use the Creation Constellation without being overcome by its power. She's presented with the opportunity to watch over humanity with the powers of a god, replacing the Celestials. Through this experience, Simone has Domino thinking about why she became a hero and how she can best change the world.
During the beginning of the issue, the background feels too busy. It's distracting due to the color splatter that represents the energy from the Creation Constellation. It's a creative effort from Charalampidis, but unfortunately, it just doesn't work out. Later in the story, Domino has an out of body experience. As she visits her all of the lives she could've lived. The panel composition and coloring of these pages is gorgeous, more than making up for the less than stellar first pages.
As of now, this is the last of Domino's adventures with the Hotshots, but hopefully, they'll return in another series sooner rather than later.
