Super Sons #7 // Review

Embodying the nostalgic time of the Saturday morning cartoon marathon, Peter J Tomasi and Carlo Barberi continue to bring the adventure and humor which this heartfelt title has become known and cherished for. Reaching the middle of the road for this maxi series, the countdown to the end begins as the finite time left with young Jon Kent unfortunately slips away. This heartfelt love letter to these young heroes continues to be an entertaining series for all readers.

The young duo still find themselves on the run from a group of young aliens obsessed with Earth’s villains as they are captured by Silver Age hero, Tommy Tomorrow. With Robin left on alone on an unknown planet, he must set out to find the whereabouts of Superboy if he ever hopes to escape his cosmic prison and face off against their new found adversaries. With call backs aplenty for popular and more niche villains, Tomasi and Barberi project nothing but pure joy and fun onto the series.

Carlos Barberi’s pencil work fits the series like a pair of fuzzy kid gloves, delivering some of his best work yet to the title. His cartoonist sensibilities shine through the pages and highlight the sheer heart this series brings to the table. The kinetic action scenes brought into life by his signature style add a fast pace to this chapter making for on overall page turner. Matt Santorelli lays the finishing inks to Barberi’s pencils while Protobunker adds the vibrant pop needed for the cartoon aesthetic synonymous to this title.

Continuing to display his love and affection for these young heroes, Peter J Tomasi further develops their friendship and each respective characters with every issue. Having spent time with both boys previously, the series proves yet again to be a breeding ground for exciting and fun adventures for the caped duo. Tomasi knows these characters inside and out as he shows what makes these both relatively new characters why fans have fallen for them so hard so fast.

An absolute page turner and joy to read, Tomasi and Barberi continue to bring the nostalgia and the heart to store shelves with this light hearted adventure. Although finite, the era of the Super Sons will forever be cherished and remembered to be one of the many highlights of DC’s Rebirth initiative.
