Avengers: Infinity War set new box office records for biggest opening weekend

The Marvel super-mashup Avengers: Infinity War debuted with a bang, earning an estimated $250 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada, and $630 million worldwide, even before China gets a peek, according to ComScore. Those are both opening weekend records, not adjusted for inflation. The previous No. 1 in the U.S. market, 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, raked in $247.9 million in its opening weekend. The third Avengers movie, Infinity War is also the longest, at 2 hours 40 minutes, drawing together the casts of previous Avengers films with characters from Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Spider-Man. It cost $300 million to make.

Marvel's 19 films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have earned a combined $15.4 billion and counting, and Marvel Studios now has six of the 10 films with the biggest opening weekends. Disney, which made the film with Marvel, has nine of the Top 10, and set a record this year as the studio to hit the $1 billion domestic box office mark fastest.
