Netflix claims "Dibs" on Dark Horse Entertainment!

UMBRELLA ACADEMY was a HUGE hit for Netflix when it premiered back in February. After losing Marvel it appears that the Once Undisputed streaming Giant is locking up Dark Horse’s comic book library for future shows. Via Variety, Netflix has just signed a first look deal with Dark Horse Entertainment. This pact allows the service to have first dibs on the film or TV rights for any Dark Horse titles.

“We are very excited about this new arrangement with the talented people at Netflix,” said Dark Horse Founder and President Mike Richardson. “We have strong creative relationships as well as a large content library to work with and, as we have seen with our recent projects, Netflix is the perfect partner to bring our stories to fans around the world.”

Richardson will produce these film and TV projects alongside Keith Goldberg and Paul Schwake. Netflix and Dark Horse previously collaborated on a film adaptation of Polar earlier this year. That Jonas Åkerlund-directed film was based on Victor Santos’ 2012 webcomic of the same name. It starred Mads Mikkelsen and Vanessa Hudgens.

“Following the success of The Umbrella Academy, we’re excited to extend our relationship with Dark Horse Comics,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content for Netflix. “The Netflix teams are already working in deep collaboration with Dark Horse to identify projects beyond the world of traditional superheroes — branching into horror, fantasy and family entertainment — that we think our members will love.”
