SCANDAL! Grant Morrison Claims Ownership of Avengers Endgame Theory // Satire
The MCU's 11-year arc of 22 movies culminates this week with the highly anticipated release of Avengers: Endgame. Fans have spent a little over a year waiting for the film after the emotion-filled cliffhanger from Avengers: Infinity War. In all that time there has been rapid speculation about how the Avengers final battle with Thanos will come to an end. But by far the most discussed, as well as most controversial, is the absurd theory of how the hero Ant-Man will best the intergalactic tyrant by shrinking, venturing into the villain's buttocks, and then expand to massive size. As ludicrous of conjecture it may be, the speculation has received much notoriety, as well as the ire from comic book writer and part-time space wizard Grant Morrison.
For those unaware, Grant Morrison is a prolific and admired writer in the comic book industry, mostly known for his imaginative stories that bend genres and minds. While Morrison has worked with some Marvel properties in the past, particularly the New X-Men and Marvel Boy series, he is mostly known for his work at independent publishers and Marvel rival DC Comics. No matter what his reputation is, Morrison has taken an interest in this theory and Internet meme related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Specifically, claiming partial ownership for the concept which he claims to have conceived for an unrelated story.
"It was mine. I came up with the idea of shoving a superhero up a dictator's bum," explained Morrison to YDRC. "It wasn't Thanos, and it wasn't even any of my Marvel work. It was a cut scene from Multiversity where Doll Man crawls up Hitler's ass to save his teammates."
Multiversity is a celebrated limited-series written by Morrison that used the concept of DC's "Multiverse" to tell a variety of connected vignettes in several alternate dimensions. The issue Multiversity: Mastermen explored an alternate version of DC's Freedom Fighters team who fought fascist supervillains in a Nazi-controlled parallel Earth. Of the members of the FreedomFighters were the diminutive Doll Man and Doll Woman, two Jehovah Witnesses who were genetically engineered to shrink just like Marvel's Ant-Man.
"The Idea behind my Freedom Fighters were they were all groups murdered by the Nazis. Black Condor was Black, The Ray was Gay and Jewish, Phantom Lady was Romani, and Doll Man was a Jehovah Witness. He and Doll Woman were pacifists because of their faith, so how do Pacifists logically fight back without violence? By crawling up the villain's ass! In the first draft, it was Hitler, and then it became the Nazi version of Superman named Overman before we cut it entirely."
While Morrison strongly believes his idea influenced the Thanos Theory, he admits it could be a coincidence.
"Look, I'm all for people using similar concepts and the sharing of universal ideas. But the similarities between two shrunken heroes crawling into someone's ass to save the day is so close that I do think I'm owed at least an acknowledgment yeah? Don't take my word for it though! The three-headed bat dragon that watches my vault in exchange for consuming my nightmares said she saw an intruder! A day before the first meme was posted no less! So, who you gonna believe?"
Avengers: Endgame is in theaters everywhere Thursday, April 25th.
