DC Comics unveils logos and Details for new "DC Universe" App

While Marvel continues to destroy all expectations with the reception of their Infinity War movie, DC refuses to be left out of the zeitgeist and public discussion, announcing this past Wednesday the name and title of their long-awaited streaming service, as well as some new details about the benefits of this service.

Now being referred to as "DC Universe," the subscription service is described as an "immersive digital experience" and as a new web-page, found at www.dccomics.com/dcuniverse. The page, however, remains pretty barren, only showing off the logo of the app as well as its initial exclusive web-series: Titans, Young Justice: Outsiders, Harley Quinn, and the recently announced Swamp Thing. The page does not include a date of the app's launch but does include a box where interested fans can include their email address to receive updates.

The most curious aspect of this new announcement is the description of the service as an "immersive digital experience," and how that might hint at exciting new developments for DC fans. In the golden age of media, money is finite, meaning fans have to be discerning about the services they subscribe to if they want to get the most bang for their buck. Even with DC's full catalog of movies and TV shows, it would still fail if it tried to compete directly with the larger streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, or even the smaller services like cartoon classic app Boomerang (coincidentally also owned by DC's parent company, Time Warner).

Adding additional services, like scheduled live streams, video curation, talk shows, or news programs, could do much to make DC Universe an interesting new type of digital service that offers fans more value for their subscription. If some of this program is also comic-oriented, it could also do wonders helping stimulate the comic economy and attract new readers.
