Justice League #19 // Review

Jorge Jimenez makes his glorious return to the title, joining Scott Snyder to take the League on a trip through the 6th Dimension. After an epilogue Legion of Doom issue previously, the stage is set for a new story arc and jumping on point as the road to The Year of the Villain begins. The series continues to stand as the premier team book on the stands as well as DC’s flagship title, with all due respect to the Caped Crusader.

It’s that time of year again, Mr. Mxyzptlk has returned to wreak havoc upon Superman’s day. This time around Clark has the plan to use Mxy for his benefit with the rest of the League by his side. After a brief but incredible entertaining showdown against the 5th Dimensional Imp, the League requests his help in taking on the Legion of Doom and their newly acquired cosmic being, Perpetua but Mxyzptlk has other things in mind for Earth’s heroes.

Jorge Jimenez continues to set himself apart from the crowd with his wonderfully stylized and unmistakable pencil work. Quickly becoming a quintessential DC artist, Jimenez continues to deliver his best work to the pages with every new issue he puts out. From his dynamic pages to his beautiful character work, Jorge will go down in DC Comics history as one of their premier artists of all time, and this is only the beginning. Sanchez continues to highlight Jimenez’s pencils with his beautiful colorwork, bringing the off-the-wall nature of Mxyzptlk into full effect.

Scott Snyder brings, whats easily, his most fun and engaging issue to the series thus far, having finally escaped the shadow of Dark Knights Metal and No Justice, Snyder is able to bring the scale of the story not seen on the title since the days of Grant Morrison and Howard Porter. Mr. Mxyzptlk is a character that needs to be used sparingly, Snyder finds a way to bring him in naturally using the pre-established mythos while also tying into what he’s established himself previously making for an overall balls-to-the-wall page turner.

With the beginning of this new arc completely firing on all cylinders, it stands as not only Snyder’s own favorite arc thus far but also the perfect jumping on point for readers who missed out previously on the title. Snyder and Jimenez continue to work together magnificently, weaving a tapestry of mystery surrounding this current arc and the soon to come, Year of the Villain.
