DC Nation #0 // Review

The next era in the DC Universe kicks off with this 32 page special helmed by a number of the company’s top creators. From the wedding of Batman and Catwoman by Tom King, Scott Snyder's highly anticipated 'No Justice’ mini series, and the debut of Brian Michael Bendis on Superman and Action Comics, this jam packed prelude is the entry point for everything DC has coming this summer. With a price point of only twenty five cents, this issue is one that cannot be missed.

Tom King commences this issue writing the first prelude, while legendary artist Clay Mann helms the pencil work. In this twisted tale, the Joker anxiously waits in anticipation for his inevitable invitation to the wedding of the century. Clay Mann brings a disturbingly haunted feel to the Joker, creating a level of high tension to the claustrophobic scenes. Having been noticeably absent from King's Batman run, the Joker has finally arrived, as twisted as ever.

Bendis is here, and any amount of prior trepidation by speculative fans will be immediately lifted in only a few pages. As readers are dropped into the Daily Planet, almost coming off as a character in and of itself, teeming with fresh life and new characters, truly setting the tone for what to expect from Bendis with 'Man of Steel’ and both Superman titles. The busy feel of the Planet is a landmark to Bendis’ ability, bringing in new characters with the long standing characters, creating a natural overall feel to the story. José Luis García-López brings the busy work environment Bendis’ script demands into fruition, encapsulating the reader and immersing them within the Planet.

With Justice League and other related titles re-launching in June, the 'No Justice’ weekly series will serve as the opening salvo to all things included in the ‘New Justice’ initiative on the horizon for this upcoming summer. Scott Snyder and fan-favorite Jorge Jimenez use their pages to display the large roster of characters included within 'No Justice’ while also giving readers a look into the four separate teams these characters will form in the miniseries. Jimenez absolutely makes each character his own, with his unmistakable signature style that truly lends itself to the high stakes, fast-paced storytelling of Scott Snyder. Having also drawn the cover, Jimenez absolutely sets the tone for this special.

From Batman and Superman to the entire Justice League, the DC Universe is headed in three very specific directions come this summer for fans to look forward to. DC Nation #0 is the one stop place to start for both long time readers and newer fans looking to jump into the universe. The next era of DC has arrived, welcome to DC Nation.
