Hal Jordan and The Green Lantern Corps #40

Robert Venditti and Rafael Sandoval bring the Zod's Will story arch to a head with the Green Lantern Corps finally arriving to save Hal Jordan from the rogue Kryptonians.

Last issue Kyle Rayner was sent back to Mogo, Green Lantern headquarters, imbued with the willpower of Hal Jordan to warn the Corps of his captivity. Now they have returned and are fully engulfed in an all out war against these rogue Kryptonians. While the Corps manages to hold them off momentarily, they are ultimately made to be quick work by this Kryptonian family.

Rafa Sandoval continues to make his mark in the Green Lantern mythos with his absolutely stunning pencils. Completely bringing Venditti’s scripts to life whether just on Mogo or in all out war, Sandoval can portray action and subtleties with equal prowess. The use of multiple double-page splashes can often be used as a shortcut, but Sandoval maintains a high level of detail while only using the double page splashes as visual tools and not simply for cutting corners. Sandoval has a great sense of power, allowing the reader to truly feel the fight, inspiring care for the Corps’ well being.

Tomeu Morey’s colors accent Sandoval's pencils, highlighted especially during the double page splashes. With the green from the Lantern Corps, the orange glow from Gorin-Sunn’s molten body or the red from Kryptonian heat vision all on display during these double page battery scenes, they overflow with glorious colors.

Once again, Venditti and Sandoval outdo themselves, moving from Kyle and Hal being left devastated by these rogue Kryptonians to Kyle and the rest of he Corps being left completely devastated by these rogue Kryptonians. The fight scenes between the Green Lantern Corps and the Kryptonians are by far the highlight of the issue with the choreography in the battle sequences perfectly displaying the absolute power and control that Zod and his family are impressing upon the Corps. Even with Hal Jordan there to help, it's still uncertain as to how they can pull through this seemingly hopeless war, making the story arc that much more interesting. From the opening double page splash to the final panel, this issue never loses steam, leaving readers anxious for the next issue in two weeks.
