Grrl Scouts #2
As punishment for not reading comics as often as I should be I was assigned, to my utter dismay, the second installment of Grrl Scouts by Jim Mahfood & company (Justin Stewart & Carmen Acosta). This is where I'm supposed to have one of those I've seen the light moments & apologize for bagging on issue #1 & falling in love with issue #2. Sadly, there is no mia culpa coming from me because this one was even more disjointed & illegible than the last one.
We open with a flashback, or maybe a VHS tape playing, that is narrated by a homeless guy who is the rightful keeper of the Magic Socks & Daphne's uncle. You get the entire history of the damned things from space aliens gifting primitive man with them to Hitler having them to the record exec that invented the east vs west hip hop war only to then see the socks go back in time some how to the old west. It really is a rambling, not very funny history of what is apparently the greatest weapon ever crafted -- it is only a weapon because men are violent creatures -- but we really don't get to see what powers they possess.
The only thing good about this book and honestly the last book is Josie, the villain. She was developed a bit last book and then more so in this one. But still not sure where her powers come from or who her "movement" are because they aren't a gang or posers (they get pissed if you call them that). Josie is at least drawn consistently, has a biography, & a concrete motivation propelling the narrative forward through the cacophony of color, rough line drawings, & badly executed action scenes. Josie is the bright spot for me if I'm relegated to reading #3, but hopefully I can make my editor happy & NOT have to do that.
