Cable #1 Review

I picked up Cable #1 in the hopes that it would be a good jumping on point and that it wouldn't be weighed down by any of the overly complex X-men history. Lucky me- because this book offered up a fun western story with Cable being a bad ass. No other X-men in sight!

For some, this is a shame. I know that Cable has a very interesting dynamic with other mutants, but for me- it is exactly what I wanted! In time, we can introduce other characters into the series but to start off with, it was nice to focus on just how badass Cable is.

Writer James Robinson keeps a swift pace throughout, in Cable's own words there is "no need for introductions". We open in a random bar in the wild west and through the character's conversations we are quickly brought up to date with what is happening. Cable is hunting someone.

The wild west is a really cool setting for this story! It allows for some beautiful scenery, lovingly rendered by Carlos Pachecho on art. However, don't get too attached to a particular setting, Cable's ability to travel through time and teleport to different locations means that this series is going to be taking place all over the world! And all through time.

This was a solid first issue and I was surprisingly hooked by it. So much so that I have even added it to my pull list! This is mostly due to the cliff hanger on the last page. I could have read it, enjoyed it and then with most X-men titles, forgotten about it but that final page makes me want to return for more. We are still very much in the dark with Cable's mission but the story is told in a way that makes the reader want to know more. There is also so much potential; with Cable's abilities he could go anywhere and do anything- so who knows what could happen next?

Art: A It's always fun to see how an artist draws Cable, with his big muscles and bigger guns. However, its even cooler to see him in an obscure setting. This art shows him in two distinctive settings, both are created skillfully and look great.

Story: A Although we still are unclear about what is going on, several interesting plot threads have been set up. Also the cliff hanger left very excited and very curious to see what happens next issue.
