You Don't Read Comics

Hellboy is returning to the BIG SCREEN!

After ages of will they, wont they, we finally have another Hellboy film announced! The working title is Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen and it is being co-written by original creator Mike Mignola. Which is all pretty exciting!

Unfortunately, Ron Perlman won't be returning as Big Red and Guillermo Del Toro will not be helming the project. Instead, this is a reboot and not only that- its going to be rated R!

So there's some good news and some bad. We fans have been petitioning for Hellboy 3 for years... So it's a shame that we aren't getting it. However, new Hellboy is better than no Hellboy, right? RIGHT??

David Harbour, who played the sheriff in Stranger Things, will be playing the titular role and Neill Marshall, who directed some GoT episodes and The Descent, is directing.

Lets unpack this information. David Harbour is a good choice for the role. He's a big, solid man. Much like Hellboy. Unfortunately, he's not red and he doesn't have horns... But I'm sure they can work around that! I've been told that with CGI and prosthetics they can make people look like demons!... So whether you think he's a good choice or not, we have no idea how he'll actually end up looking in the film.

As for Neill Marshall, this is a great choice for an R-rated Hellboy! If you've seen The Descent then you'll know how well he can create a spooky atmosphere. He's also directed episodes of Constantine, Hannibal and Westworld- which I am a fan of. If he can bring his experience from these projects then I think that would make for a really cool film. Marshall also has experience working with freaky monsters (again, see The Descent!). I trust him to bring this world to life!

I think that leaning into the horror aspects of the comics could really work to their benefit. It would also firmly separate this new film from the original two. We need a blend of dark religious imagery and spooky paranormal stuff. Hopefully this team can give us that! We had a good thing going with the first two films and it is a tragedy that Guillermo Del Toro won't get a chance to complete his trilogy however, let's stay positive and look to the future of the franchise! In my opinion the future seems bright, or more accurately... Dark and spooky!

Hellboy comics have been going for  just under 25 years now so there are a lot of stories to pick and choose from for this new adaption. I for one, cannot wait to see what comes next!
